Sail Canada's Emergency Navigation Standard provides an easier way of meeting the celestial prerequisite for Offshore Cruising certification, while equipping offshore sailors with the knowledge and skills necessary to find their way safely to land even if all electronic navigation devices have failed while offshore.

LTCO's Emergency Navigation course covers the knowledge and skills outlined in Sail Canada's Emergency Navigation Standard. It provides instruction on: obtaining a position based on a noon sight of the sun, obtaining latitude based on taking a sight on Polaris at nautical twilight, using improvised devices to obtain the altitude of a celestial object, estimating the declination of the sun to determine latitude without a nautical almanac, and making a landfall based on the declination of selected stars.
